Vanuit de haven roepen we om 07H45 op kan.11 Corinth canal control op; we hebben geluk want we mogen vrij onmiddellijk naar de toegang varen. Als we om 08H20 de kom achter de golfbrekers invaren staan de lichten op tweemaal groen. Achter een ander Belgisch jacht en Windswept, beginnen we dan aan de zes kilometer lange doorvaart naar de Saronische golf door dit indrukwekkend kanaal, terwijl de rijwegbrug voor het wachtende verkeer achter ons opnieuw uit het water verschijnt. Het kanaal is slechts 25 meter breed zodat de hoge, grijs-bruine wanden in het nog flauwe achtendlicht heel steil lijken. Een zwakke stroming neemt ons in 35' mee naar de andere kant, waar aan het plaatsje Isthmia de controletoren staat en het tolbureau. Het aanmeren is niet eenvoudig want er staat 1kn achterlijke stroming en de kade is hoog en overhangend. Wil en Jeanine staan al klaar om ons langszij te laten aanmeren want voor onze kleine lage boot is het vastleggen aan deze kade geen sinecure. Bij het betalen hoort heel wat papierwerk en we moeten onze Vlaggebrief voorleggen. Het Kanaal van Korinthe heeft de naam het duurste kanaal ter wereld te zijn - het bureaucratische Griekenland is nogmaals haar geldzuchtige reputatie gestand. Voor onze 8,50 meter boot moeten we 95,20 euro neertellen, voor een 12-meter jacht loopt het al vlug op tot meer dan 170 euro! Hoe dan ook is dit sneller en veiliger dan de erg winderige omvaart van de Peloponnesos, of houdt dit minder risico's in dan de overbrenging van een boot over de antieke dhiolkos, de met stenen bedekte weg, zoals dit "in de oude tijden placht te gebeuren "!

C'est du port que nous appelons à 07H45 sur le can.11 Corinth canal control; la chance nous sourit car nous pouvons nous présenter sans plus attendre à l 'entrée du canal. Quand nous passons les jetées les feux sont au vert. Alors, derrière un autre voilier belge et Windswept nous commençons le passage de cet impressionnant canal long de six kilomètres vers le golfe Saronique, alors que le pont routier réapparaît des eaux du canal, afin de rétablir le trafic interrompu. La largeur du canal n'excède pas 25 mètres ce qui rend les parois dans la pâle lumière du matin encore plus hautes. Un faible courant nous emporte en 35' vers la sortie à Isthmia où se trouvent la tour de contrôle et le bureau de payage. L'amarrage y est difficile car le quai est haut et par le sousbassement ouvert la manoeuvre risque d'être délicate pour notre voilier assez bas. De plus un courant arrière d'un noeud risque encore de compliquer les choses. Nous nous mettrons donc à couple de Windswept. Le payage va de pair avec une paperasserie déconcertante après présentation de notre Lettre de Pavillon. Le Canal de Corinthe a la réputation d'être le canal le plus cher du monde - la Grèce ici encore fait honneur à sa réputation d'état à la taxation vorace! Pour notre bateau de 8,50 m nous devons payer 95,20 euro, un bateau de 12 m payera plus de 170 euro! Mais quoi qu'il en soit le passage du canal est plus rapide et plus sûr que le tour très venteux du Péloponnèse, ou est moins risqué ... que le transport de l'embarcation par l'ancien dhiolkos, la route pavée, comme cela se faisait dans l'antiquité!

From the harbour we call at 07.45 a.m., on chan. 11, Corinth canal control; we are lucky because we can proceed to the entrance. When we pass the breakwaters the lights are green. So, behind an other Belgian sailing boat and Windswept we start our progress through this 6 km long canal to the Saronic gulf , while in our back the roadbridge reappears out of the canal water, restoring the interrupted traffic. The canal is only 25 m wide so in the pale light of the early morning the walls seem to be even higher. A weak current takes us in 35' to the exit at Isthmia, where the control tower and the taxoffice are located. Mooring there is difficult for our small sailing boat because the quay is high and there is an open overhanging. There is also one knot current pushing us, so we prefer to moore alongside Windswept. The tax formalities require also a lot of disconcerting paperwork and we have to show the boatpapers. The Corinth Canal has the reputation to be the most expensive canal of the world - Greece is still honoring the nickname of tax greede nation! For our 8,50 m boat we have to pay 95,20 euro, a 12 m boat will pay more than 170 euro! But however, the canal passage is faster and safer than going around the very windy Peloponnesos, or is less risky than dragging the boats by the ancient dhiolkos, the paved road, like the ancients used to do!
